Tatar Culture

Enrich Your Tatar Spirit

İ tugan tel, i matur tel,
Ätkä
m, änkämnen tele.

Dönyada küp närsä beldem,
Sin tugan tel arkılı.
The above passage is instantly recognized by Tatars all around the world. It is an excerpt is from the iconic Gabdulla Tukay poem and song, Tugan Tel (Mother Tongue), which speaks to Tukay's heartfelt love for the Tatar language: the language of his parents and the language through which he gained knowledge of the world.

From meaningful poems, to stirring songs, to informative and inspiring videos, there is no shortage of Tatar cultural materials to explore. We invite you to revisit this page, as we will periodically add audio, video and other content that is rich in Tatar spirit.

Spotlight: Ay Bılbılım, the ATTA Singing Group

In 2004, the ATTA Singing Group was formed to both foster love for Tatar music and showcase the vocal talents of our members. The group, Ay Bılbılım, is led by musical director Dilare Capanoglu, and has since performed concerts at Stanford University, UC Berkeley, on local radio station KKUP and at many ATTA functions.

Tatar yasläre
Dikkatä laek xäzerge kön tatarnıñ yaşläre:
Añlamak, belmäk, täräkkıy, mägrifät, xikmät belän
Äylänep häm nurlanıp tormakta härdäm başları.
Mondıy kürneş söyneçennän inde min aldan beläm:
Tik bolar bezgä kiräk diñgez töbe gauvasları.
Östtä bu yamsez bolıt baştan kitär, yañgır yavar,
Cirgä räxmät kük töşär yaşlärneñ izge kasdları.
Şaulap akkan su bulır tau başları, tau astları.
Kük bulıp kükrär havada xör yaşäü daulaşları,
Yaltırar izge köräşneñ xäncäre, almasları.
Yörmäsen bägre özek millät kiep kaşsız yözek, --
Bez anıñ bik zur fäxerle, çın briliant kaşları!
Tatar youth
I am very proud of our Tatar youth.
I like the way they learn, discovering the truth.
Their thoughts are so inspiring, deep and bright,
Talented young people – what a joyful sight!
This generation came the deep seas to explore,
To make the clouds vanish and the rains to pour.
Their sacred dreams – they will revive our lands,
And stream down mountains to our luscious plains.
They will raise their swords for freedom, not plunder,
The rumble of their fight will echo like thunder.
Our nation’s crown shines, it needs no sapphires,
Youth is our precious gem that everyone admires.
